What “blind third-party testing” actually involves

Inside a total-organic-fluorine screen: sampling, detection limits, and why the lab never knows whose fabric it is.

When a brand says a fabric is "PFAS-free" or "formaldehyde-free," the sentence only means something if a lab that didn't know whose fabric it was measured it and wrote down a number. That is what blind third-party testing is — and it is less mysterious, and more important, than it sounds.

Why "blind" matters

A test is only as trustworthy as its incentives. When the lab doesn't know which sample belongs to which client — or which result the client is hoping for — the number can't be nudged. Independent, accredited labs (ISO/IEC 17025) run samples against published methods, not the brand's marketing.

What a total-organic-fluorine screen actually does

Because there are thousands of individual PFAS, chasing them one by one is impossible. So the first-line screen measures total organic fluorine — essentially, how much fluorine is bound up in organic molecules in the fabric. It's a proxy: a high number means "PFAS are here, investigate further," which then triggers targeted analysis for specific compounds. Two things decide whether a result means anything:

  • Sampling. Where on the garment, how much, and how it was handled. Contamination in the lab can create false positives.
  • Detection limit. "Non-detect" is not "zero" — it means "below the smallest amount this method can see." A credible claim always states the method and its limit.
